Eco School Heroes

Bute Cottage Nursery School is the proud owner of the prestigious Platinum ECO flag—ie.  6 green ECO flags and going for the seventh! This ECO work is an integral part of our teaching and learning at Bute Cottage and really benefits from your co operation.

The criteria for awarding the Green ECO Flag is very exacting and comes under a range of headings:

  • Litter
  • Transport
  • Energy
  • Water
  • School grounds
  • Waste minimisation
  • Global Citizenship
  • Biodiversity
  • Health, well-being and food

Our Eco Code

  • Don't drop litter, put it in the bin
  • Don't waste water, turn off the tap
  • Use less plastic, keep the water clean
  • Remember to recycle, use it all again
  • We share our planet, we care for everyone

We encourage the children to become ‘Ethically informed ECO heroes’ in school and help with a range of jobs in nursery such as checking dripping taps and paper towels on the floor; recycling paper, card and plastics; gardening jobs, planting, growing fruit/vegetables and walking or cycling to school.  For those children who help in this way we have a special ECO tee shirt for them to wear in school and celebrate their contribution and Caring Bear stickers.

Any cardboard boxes that you don’t want don't need to be recycled at home - you can bring them to school where the children will up-cycle them, maybe using glue and paint to make a wonderful creation, and then you get them back again with an additional inspiring story!

We are also responsible for the community garden next to the school and will developing this area throughout the coming year.

There are MANY ways you can help with this important ECO work at home!

  • Reduse single-plastic - support plastic free Penarth
  • Walk or ride to school - we have a bike rack at the front of the school
  • Turn off any electrical appliances that aren't being used
  • Talk about where food comes from
  • Put litter in the bin
  • Recycle rubbish

Here is our latest ECO project: Toilet Twinning.

While talking and learning about how we need to look after water and not waste it from the tap, we can help those less fortunate than us.

Have a look at the Toilet Twinning website to see how it works.
